Bliessteig
Schwer
Over 105 kilometers, the Bliessteig winds through nine stages across the gently rolling landscape of the Bliesgau Biosphere and the Saarpfalz district. From the wooded floodplains on the banks of the Blies, through blooming meadow landscapes and Muschelkalk soils to distinctive Buntsandstein rock formations, it offers a fascinating variety of natural and cultural experiences.
The route begins in neighboring France, passes through historic towns like Blieskastel with its baroque flair, and continues through Kirkel and Homburg, where the Buntsandstein shapes the landscape. In Bexbach, the highest point of the path awaits at the Höcherbergturm, offering wide panoramic views over the region.
The Bliessteig is certified by the German Hiking Association as a Quality Path Wanderbares Deutschland and is part of the Quality Region Wanderbares Deutschland Bliesgau. In 2025, it was also voted Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail in the category of multi-day routes by the renowned Wandermagazin audience.
Whether for an entire long-distance hike or individual stages: the Bliessteig invites you to calmly discover the diverse nature and culture of the Bliesgau while taking deep breaths along the way.

Hiking trail marking Bliessteig
On the Bliessteig, you will encounter numerous sights, villages, landscape sections, and certainly people of the Bliesgau Biosphere. There is much to discover and experience through the different landscape types. But also the act of taking a breath, which often comes up short nowadays, is a must here. It is no coincidence that the Bliesgau Biosphere is not surrounded by crowds and invites you to relax as a model region for sustainable development. This is true at many points on the Bliessteig as well.
The route starts in France and initially follows the bank of the Blies through wooded floodplain landscapes. The upcoming stages are characterized by wide views, blooming meadow landscapes, and Muschelkalk soils. After exploring the baroque town of Blieskastel, the landscape around Kirkel and Homburg becomes increasingly rocky — typical Buntsandstein. The hiking trails become richer in forest, and the ascents increasingly challenging. In Bexbach, the highest point of the Bliessteig is reached; here you can enjoy the view from the Höcherbergturm.
