The Thirty Years' War brought courtly life to an abrupt end. The castle remained uninhabited for long periods on several occasions and was plundered and damaged. After several fires, it was finally destroyed in 1689, presumably by another fire, and finally abandoned. In 1740, it was opened up as a quarry, meaning that some of the stones from the castle walls were removed to build houses.
In the 1950s, extensive excavation and restoration work was carried out on the ruins. Among other things, the castle tower was rebuilt. The excavations continue to this day.

Then visit the local history and castle museum. It is open on Sundays and public holidays from May to October. In addition, every 2nd Sunday of the month from May to October, a guided tour offers further insights into the history of the castle.
Today, Kirkel Castle is a popular excursion destination and the venue for various events, in particular the Kirkel Castle Summer. This series of events, which is unique in Germany, allows children and adults to step back in time to the age of knights, damsels and craftsmen.
During the castle summer for schools and during the holidays, visitors can experience the Middle Ages in the immediate vicinity of the castle ruins. In the craftsmen's village, they have the opportunity to make utensils similar to archaeological finds under expert guidance. Pottery, baking, blacksmithing, archery and much more can be tried out. It's all about making things yourself and the experience of making something with your own hands.
The Kirkel medieval market heralds the start of the castle summer season every year in mid-May. Music, dancing, jugglers, falconers, craftsmen, knights' camps, food and drink as well as a wide range of different market traders from near and far transform Kirkel Castle into a colourful festival area on this weekend.
