St. Elizabeth's Church, Limbach
Elisabeth Church in Limbach is a cultural and historical gem in the Westrich region. The Baroque-style church is impressive for its history, magnificent architecture and an organ dating from 1968.
The Elisabeth Church in Limbach is one of the most important village churches in the Westrich region and impresses with its centuries-old history and Baroque charm. A small chapel already stood on this site in 1200. In 1249, Countess Loretta of Saarbrücken had a new chapel built after the death of her husband on a crusade, which she consecrated in honour of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia.
Over the centuries, the original chapel developed into the present church tower, while the nave was raised in 1727 and extended to the west in Baroque style in 1771. Damage caused by the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and the Wars of Liberation was repaired from 1826 onwards; the church was given a pulpit, gallery, altar and new pews in the classical style.
In the 20th century, St. Elizabeth's Church was restored several times after being destroyed in the Second World War. The organ from 1968, made by G. F. Steinmeyer, completes the impressive interior. With its historical charm, ornate details and quiet location, St. Elizabeth's Church is a worthwhile destination for visitors who want to experience architecture, history and a spiritual atmosphere.
