Vauban fortress Homburg on the Schlossberg
Imposing fortress above the rooftops of Homburg.
Hohenburg Castle was the seat of the Counts of Homburg in the 12th century, who were granted town privileges for their settlement at the foot of the castle hill in 1330. After the death of the last Count of Homburg in 1449, the castle and town fell to the Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken. They expanded the castle into a fortified castle with bastions. Under the French King Louis XIV, the famous master builder Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban extended and fortified the citadel, whose mighty ruins still crown the hill and tower over the town today. The fortress was destroyed in 1714. From the fortress you have a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside.
The ruins on the Schlossberg have been uncovered and secured since 1981. Most of them date from the time of the fortress.
Hohenburg Castle is also the starting point of the award-winning "Schlossberg Tour" and is also a great place to take a break at the end of the hike. At the foot of the fortress you will find the Schlossberghotel for a larger or smaller meal.
You can get more lively information with an audio tour, which you can download to your smartphone before your visit.
