The extensive palace grounds, which were more than a kilometre long, were grouped around the main palace, the stables with riding arena, the orangery with the theatre building, cavalier buildings with forecourt, barracks and farm buildings. The magnificent gardens included a zoo, cascades and ponds, a menagerie and pavilions.
In 1779, the Duke moved his residence from Zweibrücken to Homburg in Karlsberg Palace, which was considered one of the most fantastic palace complexes in Europe at the time. Together with his court, it formed the glittering centre of social and cultural life in our region for a few years until it was captured by the revolutionary troops in 1793.
