Since the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve has been a member of Deutsche Bahn’s “Fahrtziel Natur” program since 2012, we recommend traveling by train for a climate-friendly journey.
The region can be reached several times a day via the ICE/TGV express service from Frankfurt to Paris, which stops at Saarbrücken Central Station.
This is supplemented by RE and IC trains, which stop in Saarbrücken and, in some cases, in Homburg and St. Ingbert.
The Rhein-Neckar S-Bahn terminates at Homburg Central Station. Regional trains and light rail services serve 13 stations within the biosphere reserve at least once an hour daily.

For several years now, the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve has also been accessible via long-distance bus routes. With a stop in Homburg or Saarbrücken, it’s just a few kilometers to your destination.
With “FlixBus” buses, the cities of Homburg and Saarbrücken can be reached from numerous departure points across Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy). Both cities are ideal starting points for a tour of the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve.
On-site
Once you’ve finally arrived at your vacation destination in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, you can leave your car behind. Two regional rail lines and one light rail line connect 13 stops within the biosphere reserve to the surrounding cities of Homburg, Saarbrücken, St. Ingbert, and Zweibrücken.
The district and regional bus routes R7, R10, R14, and the Biosphere Bus 501 supplement this service daily with regular scheduled service, making extended hikes and bike tours in the protected area easy to enjoy. Many other regularly scheduled bus routes, as well as on-demand taxis that can be used with bus and train fares, round out the daily service. The service is further supplemented by the on-demand flitsaar service, which operates in the Blieskastel and Gersheim area.
Bicycle transport is generally free starting at 9 a.m. and, especially on weekends when capacity allows, is available around the clock.
On weekends and public holidays, the Biosphere Ticket offers particularly affordable travel throughout the entire Saarpfalz district and the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve for up to 5 people for just €9. In addition, the network’s day, family, and group tickets, as well as the DB Länderticket, are available daily.
In 2012, the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve was included in the “Fahrtziel Natur” partnership by Deutsche Bahn and the nature conservation associations BUND, NABU, and VCD.
