Hans in luck
Things are running like clockwork on the “Oil Mountain”
Up here, high above the Bliestal valley on the Ohligberg, Hans (Pick) lives happily with his small family. Fittingly, the mountain might as well be called “Ölberg” (Oil Mountain), because up here Hans has traded the “head-sized gold nugget”—just as described in the fairy tale—for oilseeds of all kinds. Which thrive magnificently in the surrounding fields. Hans captures their unique flavors in beautiful bottles at his oil mill on the Berghof, leaving you spoiled for choice: camelina oil, mustard oil, milk thistle oil, rapeseed oil, poppy seed oil, or hemp oil are all available in the farm shop. Each oil has specific properties that lend our dishes a special flavor. Hans also has some curious stories to tell about his oil plants; for instance, the hemp plants once drew teenagers up the mountain because they thought they contained intoxicating substances. They sat in the hemp field and smoked diligently, yet without any noticeable effect on body or mind, for so-called industrial hemp contains only minimal amounts of intoxicating substances. You’d probably have to smoke half the field to feel anything. So the teens’ trip up the mountain was probably for nothing. But sometimes the journey is the destination—they were active and out in the fresh air. And the amazing nature in the biosphere can be “intoxicating” in its own way.
