Friedrich Christian Schmidt founded the brewery between 1830 and 1840
founded the brewery between 1830 and 1840. Later, 2 September
1848 was adopted as the official founding date.
Around 50 years later, the Walsheim brewery
regarded as a "major brewery of international renown"
"large brewery of international renown".
Walsheim beer also had something special to offer:

conditions in southern Bliesgau, Walsheim brewing water

the Walsheim beer a top-quality beer. The shell limestone around
around Walsheim provides excellent spring water, especially for brewing
dark beer, and its composition

At the turn of the century, the brewery bore the official
"Bayrische Brauereigesellschaft vorm. Schmidt und Guttenberger"
through the marriage of Otto Guttenberger to a
daughter of the founder Schmidt. During the economic
uncertainty around 1922, part of the brewery was sold
and renamed "Walsheim Brauerei AG". The brewery's products
were sold overseas before the war,
, especially to the former French colonies.
As the owner, Dr Hans Kauter, was Jewish, the brewery
systematically caused difficulties for the brewery and
into bankruptcy. It never recovered from the destruction of the first
war in 1939/40.
Today, only the vaulted cellar of the Walsheimer Brewery remains as a reminder of what was once the largest employer in the town.
