The families, many of whom were not exactly small, lived in the smallest of spaces. You can find out how in the local history and castle museum. Today there is a fully equipped kitchen on the ground floor and a complete bedroom in the attic parlour, both with original furnishings, furniture, kitchen utensils and clothing from the turn of the century.
On the upper floor, the focus is on Kirkel Castle. The imperial fortress was first mentioned in a document in 1075 and had a chequered history until it was finally destroyed by fire in 1689. How has it developed over the centuries and what was everyday life like for its inhabitants? The artefacts from various eras unearthed during excavations on the castle grounds provide a glimpse into the past. They include the remains of everyday objects, tools and weapons, as well as ornaments and jewellery that suggest the castle's wealthier inhabitants.
Of course, the castle museum also has a real knight's armour, complete with sword and halberd. What is immediately noticeable is that the knights of the time were apparently somewhat smaller than today's average population. The exact reason for this is still unclear today.
There are many more mysteries surrounding Kirkel Castle and the Middle Ages. This is why research is still ongoing. Perhaps they will be solved one day as part of the excavations that have been ongoing since 1989.
